Our Impact

BAYAC/OCASA has consistently exceeded or come close to our program goals. Data from 2007 and 2008 reflect that success:

Services to Youth

Our AmeriCorps Members provide youth development services to K-12 students during the school day and in after school programs.34

  • Members served 2,787 students in 2007, and 2,940 students in 2008.
  • 71% of our participants experienced increased emotional safety, support from a caring adult, engaging and meaningful activities, and challenging skill-building experiences.
  • 71% increased in peer relations and goal setting.
  • 52% increased their California standardized test scores.
  • At least 95% of students who were initially OK in these areas remained OK.

AmeriCorps Member Development & Civic Engagement

119A key goal is to help AmeriCorps Members have a great experience and develop both personally and professionally. We offer training, supervision and support to make sure this happens.

  • 95%-100% were rated at least satisfactory on youth service skills such as ability to motivate youth, be a good mentor, and creative new ideas.
  • 95%-100% were at least satisfactory on professional competencies such as leadership skills, being effective at group dynamics, and appreciating diversity.
  • 95%-100% said they felt like an important, valued and supported member of their agency and their regional team.
  • 100% said they planned to be civically involved after they completed AmeriCorps.
  • 78% intended to purse a career in public service.

Community Volunteers

35Our full-time Members recruit and support adult and youth volunteers to serve their community.

  • We recruited and supported 1,034 volunteers in 2007 and 1,058 volunteers in 2008.
  • 98% of volunteers said they were satisfied with their experience.
  • 98% of volunteers said they intended to continue volunteering or be civically engaged in their community.
  • 98% of volunteers said they had either increased their commitment to volunteering in their community or that their commitment was already high and remained high.
