About AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a U.S. federal government program that was created under President Bill Clinton by the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. Each year, AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunites across the country for adults of all ages and backgrounds to address critical needs facing their communities.

In 2011, AmeriCorps provided California with the opportunity to have 8,500 individuals serve their communities.

AmeriCorps members can serve in a variety of ways:

  • Tutor and mentor disadvantaged youth
  • Fight illiteracy
  • Improve health services
  • Build affordable housing
  • Teach computer skills
  • Clean parks and streams
  • Manage or operate after-school programs
  • Help communities respond to disasters
  • Build organizational capacity

Since AmeriCorps' inception, over 96,000 Californian residents have participated in a term of service, contributing more than 100 million hours of service.
