East Palo Alto: New Perspectives-East Palo Alto

New Perspectives assists students with the productive management of their lives. Students involved in the program are presented with the necessary tools for affecting and maintaining positive academic, social and family environments. We build lasting partnerships with community services, school faculty and students. New Perspectives is dedicated to creating positive change in our students and their community. We do this by providing quality, developmental services to the youth

New Perspectives provides on campus, after school recreation services at several school sites in the Ravenswood School District. These services are provided to 5th – 8th grade students with parental permission.

Services include: sports, arts and crafts, environmental education, Lifeskills, developmental lessons, drug and alcohol prevention, team building and leadership activities. Additionally there are field trips during program and monthly field trips on weekends.

AmeriCorps Job Description:
AmeriCorps members work directly with the youth in the after-school program.

Oakland: Leadership Excellence

Leadership Excellence was started in 1989 by a group of college student activists at San Diego State University. The organization was created to provide children and youth with meaningful ways to improve their communities. The organization is committed to developing positive leadership skills, creating social change and improving the educational opportunities for youth in urban communities. Its mission is to provide grassroots community organizing and leadership skills to African American children and youth ages 5 to 21 residing in urban communities. Leadership Excellence provides a comprehensive sequence of leadership development programs that train young people to identify social and community problems and implement a plan of action that addresses these problems.

AmeriCorps Job Description:
Freedom School Teachers: facilitate a class of 10-12 students between the ages of 5-13 in leadership training, strengthening academic skills, and support in community improvement.
Camp Akili Counselors: facilitate group of 10-12 campers, African American youth ages 14-17, to educate students to think more critically about contemporary issues of inequality, and cultivate their abilities to identify problems in their communities and solve them. Facilitation in math and education workshops also included.

San Rafael: Bay Area Community Resources- New Perspectives Marin
Program Director: Don Blasky

Our purpose is to support young people to make positive decisions about their health, education, and employment. Youth development activities are led by youth, foster civic engagement, and promote community improvement. More than 2,300 students participate in ongoing BACR youth development activities each year.

BACR is the lead agency for four after-school programs at elementary, middle, and high schools in the San Rafael City Schools District. We serve primarily low income students of color, most of whom are English language learners. Our programs provide in-school tutoring of elementary and middle school students, after-school adult and peer mentoring and tutoring of high school students, and comprehensive academic assistance and enrichment programs for elementary and middle school students.

AmeriCorps Job Description:
After-School Program Assistant:

• Supervise a group of approximately 15-20 students during homework time and provide academic support as needed.
• Cultivate an environment where all children can study and learn in an efficient and positive way.
• Plan, prepare for, and carry out various recreational activities as required.
• Help with handing out snack and supervising recess. Enforce all recess rules and manage behavioral concerns.
